お盆の時期はいつ？
一般的にお盆の期間と聞かれると、世間でお盆休みといわれる8月13日～16日の4日間を想像する方が多いと思われます。かつてお盆は旧暦（太陰暦） の 7月15日 を中心とした期間におこなわれていましたが、明治期の新暦（太陽暦）の採用後は、7月15日に合わせると農繁期と重なって支障が出る地域が多かったため、8月15日 を中心とした期間をお盆とする地域が多くなったと言われています。
そのため現在では8月15日を中心とした期間がお盆の期間として広く浸透しており、お盆休みもその期間に設定されているのです。
お盆の時期は地域によってさまざま
7月に迎える地域や8月に迎える地域、年度によっては9月に迎える地域もありますが、大きくは3つに分けられます。

お盆の時期に必要ものとは？
お盆の準備は一般的に、お盆がおこなわれる月の1日に始めるのが基本です。その理由のひとつとして、お盆が行われる月の1日は釜蓋朔日（かまぶたついたち）と呼ばれ、この日は「あの世の釜の蓋が開き、ご先祖様の精霊が冥土からそれぞれの家へ旅立つ日」とされていることが挙げられます。たとえば一般的に多い新暦の8月15日周辺にお盆を迎えるのならば、8月1日から準備を始めるのがよいでしょう。
具体的には、お墓の掃除や仏壇の掃除などをおこなっていきます。合わせて盆棚やお供え物の準備も必要となりますので、それぞれ解説していきます。
盆棚
また宗派によっては、お盆の期間はご先祖様の霊は仏壇ではなく盆棚の方に帰ってくると考えられており、お位牌を仏壇から盆棚に移し仏壇の扉は閉めておく必要があります。
盆棚にするお供えものは地方や宗派によっても異なりますが、代表的なものに以下の４つが挙げられます。

お供えもの➀お位牌
なお、お位牌がひとつではなく複数ある場合は、一番古いものを右に置き、最も新しいものが左に来るような順番で並べてください。
お供えもの②盆提灯
ただし、初盆（新盆）の場合には、白提灯も用意しておきましょう。白という色は純粋無垢の印象が強く、初めて故人をお迎えする色として適切な色とされています
盆提灯は主にろうそくで実際に火を灯すタイプと、火を使わない電池式のろうそくを利用するタイプに分けられます。手軽さや安全性を求める方には、電池式のろうそくを利用するタイプがおすすめです。特にLEDろうそくを用いているものは、長時間連続点灯が可能で中には50時間以上点灯するものもあります。
お供えもの➂精霊馬・精霊牛（しょうりょううま・しょうりょううし）
精霊馬・精霊牛には、ご先祖様の霊があの世とこの世を往来するための乗り物としての役割があります。霊があの世からこの世に来るときには少しでも早く帰ってきてもらいたいという想いからにキュウリの馬に、対してこの世からあの世に戻るときにはゆっくり帰ってもらいたいという願いからナスの馬に乗るとされています。
お供えもの➃お花・食べ物
食べ物は、お腹をすかせたご先祖様を供養するためにお供えします。百味五果(ひゃくみごか)とも呼ばれており、季節の野菜や果物などをお供えするのが一般的です。
野菜は精霊馬・精霊牛で使われるキュウリやナスのほか、とうもろこしやレンコン、かぼちゃなどをお供えしていきます。果物は形が丸いものが良いとされているため、切らずにそのままお供えしましょう。代表的な果物として、スイカやリンゴ、みかんに桃、メロンやぶどう、などがあります。
お盆期間の過ごし方
- ● 盆の入り：初日である13日。迎え火をおこないます。
- ● 盆中：お盆の中日の14日と15日。お墓参りや自宅で法要をおこないます。
- ● お盆の最後の16日。送り火を焚きご先祖様を見送ります。
盆の入り（迎え火）
家の門や玄関で、焙烙（ほうろく）と呼ばれる素焼きのお皿を使い、苧殻（おがら）と呼ばれる麻の茎の部分の皮を剥ぎ乾燥させたものを重ねて火をつけていきます。そうはいってもマンションや都会に住んでいる方は、迎え火を焚くのが難しいケースも多いと思われます。その場合は火柱が高くならないよう苧殻の量を少な目に調整したり、迎え火の代わりに盆提灯を飾ることで代用が可能です。
盆明け（送り火）
送り火にはご先祖様が最後まで家でくつろぎ、ゆっくりと帰ってほしいという願いを込めて夕方以降におこなわれます。送り火でご先祖様をお見送りした後は、飾ってあった盆棚やお供え物などを片付けていきましょう。
